Wapato Access Area Bird Count Stations

Over 30 volunteers will be out at Wapato Greenway State Access Area on
Wapato State Access Area
April 24th for the District's second invasive weed pull. Volunteers will battle blackberry, ivy, holly, Scotch broom, garlic mustard, Herb Robert and Shiny Geranium which are threatening to overtake this natural area. Staff from WMSWCD, Hands on Greater Portland and the Audubon Society of Portland will lead crews in the effort to protect Oregon white oak and other valuable native trees and shrubs.

Other exciting developments include the creation of trailhead signage and brochures so that you can find your way around and learn some things about the birds and plants as you go. The District is working with Oregon State Parks and the Audubon Society of Portland to educate visitors about invasive weeds at the park, complete restoration projects and support citizen science bird counts. Take a tour around the 2.2 mile loop trail and learn what birds have been counted at each of 8 stations. Don't forget to also grab one of our invasive weed brochures at the trailhead and be on the lookout for those nasty plants. Feel free to pull some garlic mustard along the way!
