West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District began working with Chapman Elementary School in late 2009 with an interest in supporting its vibrant vegetable garden on the south side of the school.
WMSWCD signed up to screen the new film, Dirt! the Movie, and worked with Cinema 21 on N.W. 21st to show the movie in late October. All proceeds were dedicated to Chapman School's vegetable garden, which serves as a teaching tool and survives due to the hard work of students, teachers and parents.
The District is also working on the removal of a large infestation of Japanese Knotweed at the southwest corner of the Chapman School property. The infestation also covers a portion of a private homeowner's property so WMSWCD is working with both entities to treat and remove the invasive weed.
